Amami Island is part of the Amami Gunto National Park and lies in the middle of a wonderfully clear sea. Because of its enchanting coral reefs and lush subtropical underwater world, it is considered a popular destination for divers and snorkelers. The northern part of Amami is known for its white sand beaches. Amami is 65 percent covered with forest. Japan's second largest mangrove forest spreads along the central coastline. A special feature of the island is the great variety of bird species that can be observed here. Culturally, Amami thrives on its festivals, which are based on Okinawan culture, and its excellent seafood cuisine.
