Naples offers numerous historical and cultural sights, including the old town, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the most famous sights is Mount Vesuvius, whose eruption in 79 AD buried the nearby towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. These excavation sites are also important tourist attractions, providing an insight into everyday life and the architecture of Roman antiquity. In Naples itself, the majestic Cathedral of San Gennaro and the underground catacombs of San Gennaro attract history and archaeology buffs.
Das Archäologische Nationalmuseum, am Rande der Altstadt gelegen, zeigt Ausgrabungen aus Pompeij, Herculaneum und anderen Ausgrabungsstätten am Golf von Neapel. Dazu zählen einmalige, viele tausend Jahre alte Schätze wie Skulpturen, Mosaike, Fresken und Gemälde.
