Castelletto esplanade

High above the city is the impressive platform Soianata Castelletto - with a wonderful view of the old town and a 360-degree panorama. The view extends all the way to the harbour, where you can spot modern ships, the Stazione Marittime cruise port, the historic port of Genova Porto Antico and the entire port district.

A remarkable viewpoint

Eyes roam over towers and rooftops, over the elegant villa district of Genoa, near the city's Righi hill. The name Castelletto comes from a castle that once towered above the city centre, but was demolished long ago. The fortress from which the district takes its name stood here until 1849. Legend has it that it was demolished because the people feared danger to the city should it be occupied by enemy forces. Now only the name of the district still refers to it.

Above the roofs of Genoa

Baroque domes and medieval towers, the typical slate roofs and the gardens of the palazzi can be seen from even higher up, from the Spianata Castelletto. From Piazza Portello you can take the elevator Ascensore della Spianata Castelletto, which is well worth seeing. It is one of the many elevators in the city that partly end in private houses. Here, one gains height without any effort and can enjoy the view over the city in a very relaxed way. On the side facing away from the sea, one looks up to the hills where sophisticated villas are located between sprawling parks.

Famous and admired

Already in the early 20th century, the Spianata Castelletto became famous among visitors to the city. Through the photographs of the famous Fratelli Alinari, the Spianata became a landmark of the city and very popular with tourists. Architecturally extremely charming, it is not only known for its location.

It is a special experience to ride this old elevator to the viewpoint high above the city. Especially couples in love come here at sunset to spend a few romantic hours. At dusk, small bats emerge as if from the shadows, taking over from cheeky, wild collared parakeets that are lured by visitors with food.

During a stroll through the old town, one should not miss the Spianata Castelletto. Somewhat hidden, you might not find the elevator right away, even though signs point the way. A ride up with the elevator is worthwhile in any case - and at any time of the day. Whether at sunrise or at sunset, especially at the off-peak hours, the light is quite enchanting. The view is breathtaking and reaches all the way to the large loading cranes of the harbour. A worthwhile destination in Genoa.
