French Guiana is an overseas department of France on the northeast coast of South America. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Suriname to the north, and Brazil to the west and south. The country's history is closely linked to French colonial rule and the slave trade. Today, French Guiana is known for the European spaceport in Kourou and its dense tropical rainforest. Places of interest include the tropical rainforest, Devil's Island, the Iles du Salut, the Musée Départemental De Franconie, the Cayenne Botanical Gardens, and the Maroni River.
