Georgia is located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, bordering the Black Sea, Russia, Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan. In ancient times, Georgia was home to several independent kingdoms, which were unified in the 4th century. In the Middle Ages, the unified Kingdom of Georgia emerged, which flourished under King David IV and Queen Tamar in the 12th and early 13th centuries. Thereafter, the kingdom fell under the rule of various regional powers, including the Mongols, Turks, and Persians, and was finally annexed by the Russian Empire in the 19th century. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Georgia gained its independence in 1991. Georgia's main attractions are the Old City of Tbilisi, the ancient cave cities of Uplistsikhe and Vardsia, the Svetichoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta, and the mountainous region of Svanetia.
