Greenland is the largest island in the world and a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Although geographically Greenland belongs to North America, it has been politically and culturally connected with Europe, especially with Norway and Denmark, for more than a millennium. The island was inhabited by Arctic peoples who migrated from Canada, and later by Vikings and Inuit. Today the population is predominantly Inuit and is concentrated mainly on the southwest coast, while the rest of the island is sparsely populated. Much of Greenland is covered by the only permanent ice sheet outside Antarctica. Popular attractions include the icebergs in the Ilulissat Icefjord, the Northeast Greenland National Park, the Inuit Cultural Museum in Nuuk, and the thermal springs in Uunartoq.
