Qatar is a country in West Asia and is located on the Qatar Peninsula on the northeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders only Saudi Arabia and is surrounded on all other sides by the Persian Gulf. Qatar has been ruled by the ruling Al Thani family since 1868 and gained independence in 1971. The country is known for its wealth in natural gas and oil and has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world. The capital is Doha. Major attractions include the Museum of Islamic Art, the Souq Waqif, the Pearl of Qatar and Doha Cathedral.
