South Korea is a democratic state in East Asia and is located on the southern half of the Korean peninsula. With about 52 million inhabitants and a high population density, South Korea is one of the most populous states on earth. After Japanese colonial rule, South Korea was founded in the 1940s and has since had a checkered history, including the Korean War. Despite the threat from its northern neighbor North Korea, South Korea experienced a rapid economic boom and is now considered a highly modern industrial state. Among the most important sights are the capital Seoul, the historic city of Gyeongju and Jeju Island.
