Svalbard and Jan Mayen are two remote administrative units of Norway, grouped together for statistical purposes under the ISO code SJ. Svalbard is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean under the sovereignty of Norway but enjoying special status under the Svalbard Treaty. Jan Mayen is a remote island in the Arctic Ocean with no permanent population and is administered by the District Governor of Nordland. Both administrative units are the only parts of Norway not assigned to a province. The official language is Norwegian. Tourist attractions include glaciers, fjords and abundant wildlife such as polar bears, walruses and seals.
