Arkansas is a landlocked state in the south-central United States, bordered by Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma. Historically, Arkansas was part of French Louisiana and became the 25th state to join the United States in 1836. Arkansas joined the Confederate States during the American Civil War. The capital and largest city is Little Rock. Typical for Arkansas is the variety of landscapes with the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains, dense forests and lowlands along the Mississippi River. Attractions include Hot Springs National Park, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the William J. Clinton Presidential Center.
