Massachusetts, a state in the northeastern United States, is part of the New England region and borders Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and the Atlantic Ocean. The capital, Boston, is also the largest city in the state. The landscape is very diverse, ranging from coastal beaches to rolling hills and forested mountainous regions. Massachusetts is especially known for its outstanding universities, including the world-famous Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Major attractions include the Freedom Trail in Boston, the historic town of Salem, and picturesque Cape Cod with its beaches and lighthouses. In addition, the Berkshire region in the west of the state attracts visitors with idyllic scenery and cultural offerings such as the Tanglewood Music Festival.
