Minnesota is a state in the upper Midwest of the United States and is part of the Great Lakes region. It borders North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and the Canadian province of Ontario. The capital is Saint Paul, and the largest city is Minneapolis. Minnesota is known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" because of its numerous lakes, rivers and waterways, which offer scenic landscapes and many outdoor activities. The diverse natural environment includes forests, prairies and wetlands that are home to numerous species of wildlife. The Mall of America in Bloomington, the largest shopping and entertainment center in the United States, attracts many visitors each year. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in the northeastern part of the state is a vast protected area of unspoiled nature, ideal for canoeing, camping and hiking. Minnesota is also known for its diverse cultural and arts scene, reflected in such institutions as the Walker Art Center and the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis.
