North Carolina is a state in the southeastern United States and one of the 13 founding states. It borders South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia. The capital is Raleigh. North Carolina is characterized by a varied landscape that stretches from the Appalachian Mountains in the west to the Atlantic coast in the east. The universities of the so-called Research Triangle - Duke, University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University - are known for their academic and research activities. North Carolina attractions and landmarks include the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, known for its lush forests and abundant wildlife, and the Outer Banks, a chain of islands and beaches along the coast. The city of Asheville is known for its vibrant arts scene and the impressive Biltmore Estate, a historic 19th-century mansion.
