The US state of North Dakota is located in the upper Midwest of the USA and borders Canada to the north. The capital is Bismarck, the largest city Fargo. The state looks back on a rich history, ranging from the indigenous peoples, the Sioux and Mandan, to the French colonial period and the later influence of Scandinavian immigrants. North Dakota is typically characterized by its vast plains and agriculture, which accounts for much of its economy. The state is also known for its cold winters and warm summers. Tourist attractions in North Dakota include Theodore Roosevelt National Park, dedicated to the 26th president of the United States, and the North Dakota Heritage Center, which showcases the state's history and culture. Also worth seeing are the Badlands, an impressive erosion landscape, and the Maah Daah Hey Trail, a popular hiking and mountain biking trail. Other attractions include the International Peace Garden on the border with Canada and the National Buffalo Museum in Jamestown.
