Rhode Island is a state in the northeastern United States in the New England region. Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams, who fled religious persecution in 1636 and founded Providence as a haven for religious freedom. Typical for Rhode Island is the long, picturesque coast with its numerous bays. Among the most famous sights are the impressive mansions in Newport, the historic College Hill neighborhood in Providence, and the unspoiled nature on Block Island.
