Rhode Island is a state in the northeastern United States in the New England region. It is the smallest U.S. state by area, bordering Connecticut to the west, Massachusetts to the north and east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The capital and largest city is Providence. Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams, who fled religious persecution in 1636 and founded Providence as a haven for religious freedom. Typical for Rhode Island is the long, picturesque coast with its numerous bays. Among the most famous sights are the impressive mansions in Newport, the historic College Hill neighborhood in Providence, and the unspoiled nature on Block Island.
