Virginia is a state in the east of the USA. It is located on the Atlantic coast and borders Maryland, Washington D.C., West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina. Virginia was one of the founding states of the USA and joined the Union in 1788. The capital is Richmond, and Virginia's largest city is Virginia Beach. Typical for Virginia are the rolling hills and the vast coastal landscape. The state is known for its tobacco and peanut production as well as horse breeding. Virginia attractions and places of interest include the historic sites of Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown, collectively known as the "Historic Triangle." Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway offer breathtaking nature and diverse outdoor activities. The coastal city of Virginia Beach is a popular vacation destination with its expansive beaches and nearby First Landing State Park. Other attractions include Arlington National Cemetery, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and Luray Caverns.
