Washington is a state in the northwestern United States. It is located on the Pacific coast and borders Oregon, Idaho and the Canadian province of British Columbia. The capital is Olympia, the largest city is Seattle. Typical of Washington is its varied landscape, ranging from dense forests and mountain ranges to fertile valleys and rugged coastlines. The state is known for its rainy Pacific coast and the Cascade Range, which divides the climate and nature. Among Washington's best-known attractions are Mount Rainier National Park, North Cascades National Park and Olympic National Park, all of which offer stunning mountain landscapes, dense forests and unique ecosystems. Seattle, the "Emerald City," is known for its cultural attractions such as the Space Needle, Pike Place Market and the Museum of Pop Culture. Washington is also a paradise for outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, climbing and boating, with Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands being particularly popular.
