Genoa lighthouse

Torre della Lanterna

Genoa has always been characterized by shipping. For seafaring, navigation and orientation are of particular importance. In order to always find the port safely and to find their way in the treacherous currents off the coast, the Genoese built a lighthouse as early as 1128. The hill of San Benigno, near the district of Sampierdarena, was chosen as a suitable site.

The hill of San Benigno, near the Sampierdarena district, was chosen as a suitable location. In the course of history, it was rebuilt many times or even newly erected. Today, the "Torre della Lanterna" is one of the most famous buildings in Genoa and a landmark of the city that towers high into the sky. Its imposing dimensions and a height of 76 metres make it the highest lighthouse in Europe. As it has two viewing platforms, it offers a breathtaking view of the city and the sea.

A monument in the course of time

Already the medieval building from the year 1128 reached the airy height of almost 80 metres. In contrast to today's building, which consists of two parts, this tower was built in three parts. In the beginning the beacon was lit with wood. Later oil was used for this purpose. In the 19th century the tower was modernized decisively. In 1840 a rotating beacon optic with Fresnel lenses was installed. In 1881 and 1913, the technology was improved again, so that the range of the light could be increased further and further. However, the Torre della Lanterna was not electrified until 1936.

In the course of the centuries the lighthouse was again and again an important reference point for the sailors. Unfortunately, this was not only in peaceful times, but also during several wars. In 1506, for example, the once proud Republic of Genoa rose up against the occupation by the French. In the warlike conflicts about the sovereignty of the city and the republic, also the Torre suffered a lot of damages. It was not until 1543 that it was rebuilt in its present form, consisting of two stone ashlars.

A similar fate befell it in the battles of the Second World War. Again, the landmark was badly damaged in fierce battles between the Allies and troops of the Nazi regime. It was not until 1956 that the people of Genoa were able to admire their Torre della Lanterna in all its glory once again.

Popular with locals and visitors

This chequered history has contributed to the locals taking the tower firmly to their hearts. It is an integral part of Genoa's self-image. This has filtered through into the world of sport. The city derby between the two local football clubs, Sampdoria Genoa and CFC Genoa, who compete in the top-flight Serie A, was named "Derby della Lanterna" after the lighthouse. But the Torre is also very popular with visitors to the port city. On selected weekdays it is possible to visit and climb the tower.
