Japan's main island is also the country's largest and most densely populated. More than 100 million people live densely packed in the valleys between the volcanoes. Among them is the famous Mount Fuji, which with its 3,776 meters is visible all the way to Tokyo. The island is divided into five regions: Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Chugoku and Kansai. Tohoku is a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts, while Kanto is home to the megacities of Tokyo and Yokohama. Mount Fuji and its five lakes are located in the Chubu region. Kansai is visited by travelers who want to admire Kyoto's famous temples or experience the alternative scene of Osaka. Chugoku is home to the city of Hiroshima and the famous Miyajuma Gate.
