House Kammerzell

Maison Kammerzell

The Kammerzell House is a 15th century timbered house and one of the most famous buildings in Strasbourg. It is located next to the cathedral and today houses a hotel and restaurant.

The house was originally built in 1427, but was later rebuilt several times. The first reconstruction dates back to 1467, when the ground floor was built of stone, which is still preserved and clearly visible today. From 1589, the three floors above were built. They cantilever slightly, thus protruding above the first floor. They are richly decorated, with lavish carvings that still impress visitors today. Above them are another three floors under the roof.

Richly decorated wooden facade

The carvings on the façade are a mixture of sacred and profane elements. They quote biblical scenes, but also take their cue from Greco-Roman antiquity - and also from the Middle Ages. At the end of the 19th century, specifically in 1892, the Maison Kammerzell was extensively renovated and restored, and shortly afterwards the painter Léo Schnug was commissioned to paint murals inside the building. These paintings have been on display there since 1905.

A long history

The dark wood and finely chiselled carvings make the house a real eye-catcher in Strasbourg and one of the most visited sights. It is considered one of the most beautiful half-timbered houses in the world and belongs to the Late Gothic period. The special thing about the Maison Kammerzell is that it has been preserved in its original substance compared to similar buildings from the same period, such as the Knochenhaueramtshaus in Hildesheim and the Salzhaus in Frankfurt am Main.

Special atmosphere

Located in the heart of Europe, not far from Strasbourg Cathedral, the house represents the proud, centuries-old splendour of the city. 75 glass windows, so-called cul-de-bouteille, bull's-eye windows, let the light into the rooms and conjure up a very special atmosphere. On the ground floor is the Léo Schnug room, named after the artist who painted the allegorical frescoes on the walls in 1904. The murals have names: "Ship of Fools", "Executioner's Supper" or "Tantalus' Agony". They are also responsible for the Caveau's reputation as the most beautiful wine bar in Strasbourg.
On the first floor, visitors have a view of Strasbourg Cathedral and its delicate pink spires. In the alcove on the first floor as well as in the bishop's salon and the salon vigneron (the winegrower's salon), subdued light penetrates through the bull's-eye windows. You feel like a guest from another century.

Hotel and restaurant

Today, Haus Kammerzell houses a hotel and a restaurant. There are only nine rooms, but they are furnished according to today's standards and offer visitors every comfort. In the restaurant guests are served the best French delicacies, for example Presskopf, Coq au Riesling, Waedele and much more. Guy-Pierre Baumann is the gifted chef who brings together tradition with completely new ideas and spoils his guests with dishes based on top secret recipes.
