The shrine island of Miyajima is considered one of the three most beautiful places in Japan. The traveler is already welcomed by a bright red torii gate in front of the island, which invites you to let the spirituality of the island take effect on you. Directly on the shore, the view of the Itsukushima Shrine opens up. If you feel a little adventurous after visiting it, you can take a cable car to the forested summit of the island, inhabited by monkeys. Downhill, winding hiking trails characterized by lush vegetation lead the way. The hiker is led past a sacred flame that has burned continuously for 1200 years.
