Karlskrona
Located in the very south of the kingdom, in the province of Blekinge, the harbor town of Karlskrona (population 35,000), built on several islands, has been the most important location of the Swedish navy since the 17th century. Apart from partly discreetly shielded modern facilities of today's Swedish naval forces, the townscape of Karlskrona is especially characterized by the historical buildings of the old naval harbor. Since 1998, the old fortifications, wharves, prisons and harbor quays have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List along with other historically valuable buildings in the city. When touring the Karlskrona Islands, don't miss to take enough time for the excellent Naval Museum on Stumholen.
Karlskrona, with its many tunnels and catacombs dating back to the old naval days, has more to offer its visitors than just naval history. The city can also convince as a destination for bathing pleasure and leisure sports. Karlskrona offers first-class bathing opportunities and starting points for motorboat or rowing boat trips through the enchanting world of the archipelago off Karlskrona. A trip to the Wämöparken culture and amusement park is also highly recommended.
