King's Chair

The Königstuhl is one of two local mountains in the university town of Heidelberg. With its 567.8 meters, it is the highest mountain peak in the Little Odenwald Valley. The Königstuhl is known beyond the region because of Heidelberg Castle, which sits enthroned on one of its slopes.

The local mountain of Heidelberg

The Königstuhl is only 7 kilometres away from Heidelberg's old town. If you reach the summit, you end up in an oasis of silence and are surrounded by beautiful nature. You also have a fantastic all-round view of Heidelberg, the entire Neckar valley and the Rhine plain. If the visibility is good, you can even look across to France - then you will see Alsace on the horizon.

Families with children can look forward to a superlative amusement park - a 48,000 m² fairytale paradise. Or visit the falconry Tinnunculus! Here you can watch exciting flight demonstrations. But that's not all: In the famous national observatory you can dive into the world of astronomy. A large kiosk takes care of your physical well-being. Here you will find many regional delicacies.

If you are looking for peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle, you should go hiking! There are various routes that start not far from the mountain station and are well signposted. How about a hike along the Via Naturae, for example?

Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the Königstuhl-Walking-Parcours: the signposted circular route takes you along a blue or red route around the Königstuhl. Athletes for whom the individual routes are too short can combine both sections! To do this, change routes at Leopoldstein or Kohlplattenbrunnen. This gives you a total distance of 8 kilometres! The route leads along natural paths and is suitable for both professionals and novices due to the small differences in altitude. The tour is not only a good cardiovascular workout, but also offers great places for short breathers, during which you will be enchanted by the view.

Heidelberg mountain railway

The traditional mountain railway transports visitors daily from the valley station Kornmarkt to the castle, further via the station Molkenkur up to the summit of the Königstuhl. Directly at the top station you have the unique opportunity to take a look into the engine room of the historic railway. In the adjacent permanent exhibition you will learn everything about the history of the Heidelberg Tramways and Mountain Railways (HSB)! Small tip: If you want to start your day at the Königstuhl, you can park at the parking lot "Klingenteichstraße". From here you can descend into the valley and you are already standing in the old town alleys of the university town of Heidelberg. We wish you an unforgettable stay and lots of fun!
