Madeira is considered the island of flowers. The vegetation is lush, no matter what the season: it is green and blooming all year round. However, Madeira is not only a perfect vacation destination for (amateur) botanists: hikers can roam through the rugged volcanic landscape or climb Pico Ruivo - at 1862 meters the highest mountain on the island. Those who prefer to stay at sea level can wander through the capital Funchal with its 16th century cathedral or try to spot dolphins off the island's coast.
