Known for its warm climate and volcanic soils, Miyakejima Island gives a tropical, very lush impression. Both water sports and a dip in the hot springs offer variety and relaxation. Due to the colorful tropical fish and coral reefs, snorkeling is a must for many vacationers. The entire island is protected and is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. However, hiking and swimming in the springs around the main crater Mount Oyama should be avoided, as it is still active. A hike on the Ako Lava Trail along the west coast opens up spectacular views of solidified lava flows.
