Monopoli

Your travel guide for Monopoli
Monopoli is a picturesque town in the Italian region of Apulia, around 40 kilometers from the provincial capital of Bari. The city is known for its historic architecture, its deep-rooted fishing tradition and its beautiful beaches on the Adriatic coast.

The origins of Monopolis reach far back into the past. Archaeological finds, such as in Via Papacenere and Piazza Palmieri, point to an important settlement as early as the Bronze Age. They date from the 2nd century BC to the Late Bronze Age (11th century BC) and provide evidence of early trade with Greece, as evidenced by the discovery of shards of Mycenaean pottery.

Today's Monopoli dates back to an ancient Greek settlement that was once under the control of the city of Gnathia and whose inhabitants settled in Monopoli after its destruction by the Ostrogoth king Totila in 545. The resulting significance as the "only city" is reflected in the name Monopolis.

During the heyday of Venetian rule from 1484, Monopoli developed into an important economic center, primarily through trade in agricultural products such as oil, almonds, carob and wine. This development was closely linked to the strategic location of the port, which was considered the only safe base between Bari and Brindisi. When the Venetians attempted to elevate Monopoli to a barony, the inhabitants resisted and bought their freedom with a sum of 51,000 gold ducats.

Under Spanish rule, Monopoli became a free city again in 1545. The town walls were subsequently extended and the old castle restored. After a brief Habsburg period, the town came under the rule of the Bourbons and eventually became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

About one kilometer northwest of the city center is the Grotta della Mura, an archaeological site with finds from various eras, including the Middle Paleolithic period. The grotto is particularly famous for the child burial from the Upper Palaeolithic period and the bone jewelry pendants found during excavations in 2006.
