German Museum

What few people know is that the official name of this museum is the "German Museum of Masterpieces of Science and Technology". But the museum itself alone is a masterpiece: visitors can satisfy their hunger for knowledge in more than 30 exhibitions on about 25000 m². Every year, around 1.5 million Munich residents and guests of the city visit this wonderful museum.

Multiple locations

While a large part of the museum is located on Munich's Museum Island, other parts of the museum can be visited at Munich's Theresienhöhe, others at the Flugwerft Schleißheim and even a part in Bonn. Even those who "only" visit the part on Museum Island should select some areas according to personal interest, as it is almost impossible to visit the entire museum in one day.

Thematic areas

All exhibitions in the German Museum are divided into the categories "Natural Science", "Materials, Energy and Production", "Communication, Information and Media", "Man and Environment" and "Transport". Each of these categories is subordinated to at least a handful of exhibitions.

Those interested in the use of raw materials, for example, will find an exhibition mine under "Materials" in which the methodology used in mining from the 16th century to the present day can be seen and compared. Those who have nothing to do with technology and are more inclined to the arts will also find an exhibition on music automatons and electronic musical instruments.

For geographers, there is an exhibition on measuring the earth. There's something for everyone, and the best part is: visitors, big and small, get to turn knobs, flip levers and switches to experience the museum interactively. Many of the exhibits in the German museum can also be touched. So it's more than worth a visit to one of the best technical museums in the world!
