Musée National Marc Chagall

Largest public collection of the works of Marc Chagall
The Musée National Marc Chagall is located in the Cimiez district and is one of 33 French national museums. It displays more than 400 works of the famous French painter Marc Chagall (1887 - 1985). The state museum was founded during the artist's lifetime and opened in 1973.

Biblical paintings

Central to the collection are seventeen paintings on biblical themes from the Old Testament, offered to the French state in 1966. 12 large-scale works of this series, illustrating the books of Genesis and Exodus, are shown to the visitor in the first room. In a second smaller room follow 5 more paintings on the Song of Songs of the Old Testament. Numerous other works on biblical and secular themes round out the exhibition, which is the largest public collection of works by Marc Chagall.
