Vonderau Museum

In the middle of the pedestrian zone of Fulda, on a good 400 square kilometers, you will find North Hesse's well-known Vonderau Museum. For families as well as school classes, the largest museum between the cities of Kassel and Frankfurt offers a great destination. In three permanent exhibitions and Hesse's first planetarium, something suitable for any interest can be found.

A long and eventful history of the museum

With the donation of a private collection, the museum was founded in 1875 and got a home with the city school of Fulda. Joseph Vonderau, researcher and teacher, who himself discovered many objects from different historical periods during excavations and served for a time as honorary director, gave the museum its name. After a move to the City Castle and subsequent renovations from the 1960s to the 1980s, the museum has had a troubled history. In 1994, it was finally relocated and reopened in the north wing of the City School, where it had its beginning at that time. There it remains to this day.

Regional focus and a place for little discoverers

The three permanent exhibitions have a regional focus and follow the goal of bringing visitors closer to the history and nature of Fulda and the surrounding area. In the cultural history section, insights can be gained into the history of the city from the Stone Age to the present day. Regional paintings and sculptures from the past as well as from modern times can also be admired. The third permanent exhibition deals with regional natural history. Above all, the geological origins of eastern Hesse and typical ecosystems with a view to the animal and plant world find attention here.
Children also get their money's worth during their visit to the Vonderau Museum. With the help of so-called "hands-on" stations, children can explore the natural history exhibition as little explorers and investigate the animals on display using various materials, such as microscopes or magnifying glasses. These methods encourage both active engagement and independent learning by the young explorers.

Hessen's first planetarium

In addition to great experiences in the exhibitions, visitors can also take virtual journeys through the universe. In the small planetarium, which is equipped with fulldome video projection technology and has room for 35 people, both space excursions and observations of the Fulda starry sky can be carried out. Since the spectators do not look at a screen but sit under a dome, they are right in the middle of the action and thus get an unforgettable event.

The Vonderau Museum is always worth a visit. Whether young or old, many new discoveries can be made here with fun and games. On a trip to Fulda, a tour of the museum should therefore not be missed.
