New City Hall

The new town hall in Wiesbaden is not as new as it sounds. It dates back to the late 19th century, but at that time it was a new building. It is located at the Schlossplatz near the city palace, where the Hessian Parliament has its seat. Nearby you will also find the Marktkirche. The Old Town Hall is also still preserved in the city, it is located in the Marktstraße.

The new building was built between 1883 and 1887 by the architect Georg von Hauberrisser. He also designed the New Munich Town Hall and the Saarbrücken Town Hall, one in the neo-Gothic style, another in the neo-Renaissance style.

As a tourist in Wiesbaden, you can even buy souvenirs with the image of the New Town Hall. The New Town Hall is distinguished by its magnificent architecture. It was built during the Empire and at that time, people wanted to upgrade the external appearance of the city. The special thing about the ground plan is that it is pentagonal and has a turret at each corner. The style of the New Town Hall is the Renaissance style.

The New Town Hall lasted in its basic form until the Second World War, but important parts of the Town Hall were preserved, such as the main gable and two pointed towers. However, the front was completely renewed. The new parts were simplified, but the entrance area remained. A whole floor was added.

The Ratskeller is now catered for and in addition to the office rooms and council chambers there are also exhibition rooms where exhibitions are regularly held. The special feature of the heating system is that it is heated with thermal water. Here there is a cooperation with the local thermal spa, which has Emperor Frederick as its namesake.

The painter Kögler has immortalized himself in the Wiesbaden Ratskeller and designed the wine cellar and the guest room. Visitors will find witty texts and special atmospheric pictures. Even today, the painter is honoured for his paintings.
