Prague TV Tower

The Prague TV Tower does not look like a classic TV tower. The unusual structure stands in the east of the city on an elevated site in the Mahlerovy sady park.

The tallest building in Prague

The Prague Television Tower is called Žižkovská televizní věž in Czech, and its name is based on its location in the Žižkov district. The construction of the Prague TV Tower took seven years. The first sod was turned in 1985, and the tower was completed on 18.02.1992. In total, the tower is 216 meters high, making it the tallest building in Prague.

A tower made of concrete columns

The Prague TV Tower consists of three 134 meter high concrete columns. On top of these steel-clad columns are broadcasting technology rooms, the visitors' terrace and the tower restaurant. The thickest concrete column, which also houses the two visitor elevators, has a diameter of 6.4 meters. The antenna mast is also attached to it.

The other two concrete columns each have a diameter of 4.8 meters. They contain a staircase and the staff lift. The tower restaurant is located at a height of 66 meters, while you have to climb to a height of 97 meters to enjoy the view over Prague from the glass viewing platform.

In addition to its function as a lookout tower, however, it is also used for broadcasting for television and FM radio programs and as a meteorological station.

The unusual appearance of the Prague TV Tower

There is a special reason why the Prague TV Tower looks the way it does: its modern shape was deliberately chosen by architect Václav Aulický to exclude any possibility of direct comparison with the historical buildings in the Old Town of Prague.

On 29.5.2000 sculptures of crawling infants were placed on the tower. They were made by the Czech sculptor David Černý. However, they were taken down again as early as November 2000. In October 2001, the sculptures returned and will remain there for the next twenty years.

At night, the tower is illuminated in the national colours of red, white and blue.

The observation deck

The observation deck consists of three cabins, which are connected by a room. In this connecting room, visitors can watch a film about the history of the creation of the TV Tower. The three viewing rooms are divided thematically and offer visitors the best view over the city due to their different positioning on the tower.

The Restaurant

For those who like to visit unusual restaurants, the Prague TV Tower is the place to be.
The Oblaca Restaurant offers a 360-degree view of the city and has been awarded the Golden Lion, the Czech Republic's highest gastronomy award, every year since 2015.

One Room Hotel

If you want something even more out of the ordinary, consider spending a night at the One Room Hotel. At a height of 70 metres, the Prague TV Tower is home to exactly one hotel room, as the name suggests. Here, guests can look forward to individual service and probably the best view from the hotel room that there is in Prague.
