Transportation in Berlin
Subway
The Berlin U-Bahn is an extensive network consisting of nine lines and covering almost all districts of the city.
- U1: It connects the stations Warschauer Straße and Uhlandstraße. This line runs through some of the most popular districts such as Kreuzberg and Schöneberg.
- U2: One of the most important lines, running from Pankow in the northeast to Ruhleben in the west. It stops at important stations such as Alexanderplatz, Potsdamer Platz and Zoologischer Garten.
- U3: This line runs from Warschauer Straße to Krumme Lanke and mainly serves the south-western part of Berlin.
- U4: One of the shortest lines, running between Nollendorfplatz and Innsbrucker Platz.
- U5: It connects the eastern part of Berlin, starting in Hönow, with the central Alexanderplatz and continues to the main station.
- U6: This line runs from Alt-Tegel in the north through the city center to Alt-Mariendorf in the south.
- U7: This is the longest subway line in Berlin and runs from Spandau town hall to Rudow.
- U8: It connects northern Wittenau with southern Neukölln and serves important junctions such as Alexanderplatz and Hermannplatz.
- U9: This line runs from Osloer Straße in the north to Rathaus Steglitz in the south, passing through important locations such as the Zoologischer Garten.
S-Bahn
The S-Bahn network in Berlin consists of several lines that serve both the city center and the surrounding suburbs.
- S1: runs from Oranienburg via Gesundbrunnen, Friedrichstraße, Potsdamer Platz, Wannsee to Potsdam Hauptbahnhof.
- S2: runs from Bernau via Gesundbrunnen, Friedrichstraße to Blankenfelde.
- S25: runs from Hennigsdorf via Gesundbrunnen and Südkreuz stations to Teltow Stadt.
- S3: runs from Erkner via Ostkreuz, Friedrichstraße, Ostbahnhof to Spandau.
- S41 and S42 (Ringbahn): These two lines form the S-Bahn ring around Berlin city center. The S41 runs clockwise, the S42 counter-clockwise.
- S45, S46, S47: These lines connect the southeast of Berlin with the city center. The S45 runs from Südkreuz to BER Airport - Terminal 1-2, the S46 from Königs Wusterhausen to Westend and the S47 from Spindlersfeld to Hermannstraße.
- S5: connects Strausberg Nord via Ostkreuz, Friedrichstraße with Westkreuz.
- S7: runs from Ahrensfelde via Ostkreuz, Friedrichstraße, Potsdamer Platz to Potsdam Hauptbahnhof.
- S75: runs from Wartenberg via Ostkreuz to Westkreuz.
- S8: runs from Zeuthen via Ostkreuz and Pankow to Birkenwerder.
- S85: This line runs between Waidmannslust and Grünau via Schönhauser Allee and Ostkreuz.
- S9: connects BER Airport - Terminal 1-2 with Spandau via Ostkreuz and Charlottenburg.
Buses
The bus network in Berlin is extensive and serves as a supplement to the U-Bahn and S-Bahn, especially in areas not served by the S-Bahn. There are also night buses, which are particularly useful when the U-Bahn and S-Bahn are not running.
Streetcars
Streetcars are another important part of the public transportation system in Berlin, especially in the eastern part of the city. Streetcars offer a pleasant ride and are a good option for shorter distances in the neighborhoods where they operate.
Regional trains
Regional trains are a fast and efficient option for traveling to more distant parts of Berlin and the surrounding areas. They connect Berlin with other cities and regions in Brandenburg and beyond.
Ferries
There are a number of ferry services in Berlin operated by Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG).
- F10 - Wannsee - Alt-Kladow: This ferry connects Wannsee and Alt-Kladow across the Großer Wannsee and offers a beautiful view of the surrounding water landscape and villas.
- F11 - Oberschöneweide - Baumschulenweg: This ferry crosses the Spree and connects the districts of Oberschöneweide and Baumschulenweg.
- F12 - Wendenschloß - Grünau: The F12 crosses the Dahme and connects Wendenschloß with Grünau, which is particularly popular with walkers and cyclists.
- F21 - Krampenburg - Schmöckwitz: The ferry is an important link between Krampenburg and Schmöckwitz and offers an idyllic trip on calm waters.
- F23 - Rahnsdorf - Müggelheim: This route crosses Lake Müggelsee and connects Rahnsdorf with Müggelheim. It offers a picturesque view of the water landscape and is very popular with tourists.
- F24 - Rahnsdorf - Kruggasse: This small ferry offers a short crossing over the Müggelspree and connects Rahnsdorf with Kruggasse.
