Transportation in Florence
Buses
The bus network in Florence is mainly operated by the company ATAF & LI-NEA. It forms the backbone of the city's public transport system and offers numerous routes connecting the city center with the suburbs and neighboring municipalities. Buses are often the preferred mode of transportation for short and medium distances within the city. The buses are generally modern and comfortable and offer connections to the most important sights and districts.
Streetcar
Florence has a small but growing streetcar network, which is a fast and reliable alternative to the bus. The three lines connect important parts of the city, including the main train station Santa Maria Novella, and provide a good connection to Peretola airport.
- T1 - Leonardo: This line connects the city center of Florence with the western suburbs. It starts at Santa Maria Novella Central Station and runs through the historic center to Scandicci.
- T2 - Vespucci: Line T2 connects Florence's Peretola Airport (Aeroporto di Firenze-Peretola) with Santa Maria Novella Central Station. It offers a direct and fast connection between the airport and the center of Florence.
- T3 - Bagno a Ripoli: Line T3, the latest addition to Florence's streetcar network, connects the city center with the eastern suburb of Bagno a Ripoli.
Trains
Florence's main train station, Santa Maria Novella, is a central hub for regional and national trains. It offers connections to other major Italian cities as well as to local destinations in Tuscany. The trains are a good choice for day trips to the surrounding cities and countryside.
