Transportation in Naples
Subway (Metro)
Naples has a metro network with several lines. The most important are
- Line 1 (Linea 1): Also known as "Metropolitana dell'Arte" because of its artistically designed stations. This line connects the north of the city from Piscinola to the port area near Piazza Municipio with an extension to Garibaldi, where there is a connection to the central station.
- Line 6 (Linea 6): This line connects the Mergellina district with the university district. It has fewer stops than Line 1 and is more geared towards local transport.
Suburban trains (Circumvesuviana)
The Circumvesuviana is a regional rail network that connects Naples with the Vesuvius area and other places in the province of Campania. It is particularly popular with tourists as it offers a cheap and convenient way to visit some of the region's main attractions. However, it should be noted that these trains can often be overcrowded, especially during rush hours and the peak tourist season.
- Naples-Sorrento: This route runs along the coast and serves popular tourist destinations such as Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento. It is one of the most used routes by tourists as it offers direct access to the famous archaeological sites and the picturesque Amalfi Coast.
- Naples-Poggiomarino: This line runs through the Vesuvius area and serves smaller towns and villages. It branches off from the main line to Sorrento in Pompeii and ends in Poggiomarino.
- Naples-Sarno: This line also runs through the Vesuvius area and ends in the town of Sarno. It is an important connection for commuters and locals.
- Naples-Acerra: This line connects Naples with the town of Acerra. It is less touristy and is mainly used by commuters.
- Napoli-Baiano: This line runs northeast of Naples and serves as an important connection to the municipalities in this region.
Funicolare (cable cars)
Naples has several cable cars that connect different parts of the city, including the Funicolare di Montesanto, the Funicolare di Chiaia and the Funicolare di Mergellina. These not only provide a fast connection between the higher and lower parts of the city, but also offer impressive views of the city and the surrounding countryside.
Buses
The bus network in Naples is extensive and connects many parts of the city and its surroundings. It is operated by the local transport company ANM. The buses are a good way to reach destinations that are not directly served by the metro or cable car.
Streetcar
The streetcar also plays a role in Naples. It complements the transport network and offers an alternative way of getting around the city, especially along some of the main roads.
Ferries
Thanks to its location by the sea, Naples also offers numerous ferries to the surrounding islands such as Capri, Ischia and Procida, as well as to other coastal towns.
