Transportation in Oslo

Oslo Metro (T-Bane)

The T-Bane is the backbone of public transportation in Oslo. It consists of several lines that connect the city center with the outer districts and some suburbs. The metro is characterized by a high frequency, reliability and a route that offers breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding nature.

  1. Line 1 (green): This line connects Frognerseteren with Bergkrystallen. A special feature of this line is that it runs over Holmenkollen, a well-known winter sports area with the famous ski jump. It therefore not only offers an important transport connection, but also spectacular views.
  2. Line 2 (red): Runs between Østerås and Ellingsrudåsen. The line serves important areas to the west and east of Oslo and is known for its regular and efficient service.
  3. Line 3 (blue): From Kolsås to Mortensrud. This line provides a direct connection between the northwest and southeast of Oslo and is therefore very popular with commuters.
  4. Line 4 (ring line, orange): This unique line operates as a ring line and connects Storo, Sinsen, Carl Berners Plass and Tøyen stations. It allows passengers to move quickly between different parts of the city without having to travel into the city center.
  5. Line 5 (yellow): Runs between Vestli and Storo. This line mainly serves the north-east of Oslo and is important for commuters who live or work in this part of the city.

Streetcars (Trikk)

The streetcar network in Oslo is an important part of the public transportation system. The streetcars provide good coverage of the city center and some adjacent districts.

Buses

The bus network in Oslo is extensive and connects areas not served by the T-Bane or streetcar. The buses in Oslo are modern and environmentally friendly, many are electric or have other environmentally friendly propulsion systems. Buses are an important alternative, especially in the evenings and at weekends when trains run less frequently.

Ferries

Oslo is located on the Oslofjord and ferries are a characteristic means of transportation to reach different parts of the city and the surrounding islands. The ferries not only offer transportation, but also a beautiful view of the coast and the city. They are very popular with commuters and tourists, especially in summer.

S-Bahn

While the S-Bahn trains (often called "Tog" in Norwegian) are mainly used for regional transportation between Oslo and the surrounding cities, they also play an important role in local transportation. They complement the T-Bane network, especially for connections to more distant suburbs and neighboring cities.
