Ravenhof

Cour du Corbeau

The Cour du Corbeau is one of the most beautiful half-timbered houses in Strasbourg. Somewhat hidden, you can reach it via the Quai des Bateliers, past the Place du Corbeau (Raven Square).

Hostel for the celebrities

The Rabenhof was built in the 16th century and was for over 300 years a hostel for various illustrious personalities of the era such as the German Emperor Joseph II, the Swedish General Gustav Horn or even the King of Prussia Frederick the Great.

In 1854 the lodging house, which was called "The Rappen" at that time, closed and only the glass factory "Ott Frères", which was also housed in the building, remained open for over 100 years. In 1871, the trimmings manufacturer "Seitz", which also produced for the Shah of Persia, opened in the former hostel section. "Seitz also used part of the Cour du Corbeau as workers' quarters.

Almost 50 years later, in 1930, the Rabenhof was listed as a historical monument. But since 1982 the building had been empty and the ravages of time were gnawing away at the building. In 2006, the first plans were made to restore the Rabenhof.

After several years of renovation work, during which the original history and ambience of this building were preserved, the house opened in May 2009 as the Hotel Cour du Corbeau, thus continuing its centuries-long history as a place to stay.

What to see.

Located not far from Rabensplatz and the bridge of the same name, a visit to the Rabenshof is recommended for its architectural beauty. Here you can see a beautiful half-timbered building with its courtyard and original cobblestones. In the wooden gate at the entrance you can see a raven forged from iron bars, which gives the sight its name.

Since it is nowadays operated as a hotel again, you can stay here in a historical ambience or try regional specialties in the associated restaurant or cocktail bar.

On the way back, a short stop at the Rabenplatz is interesting. This was once used as a place of execution for murderers and is now a popular meeting place. Especially the restaurant "Au Canon", a former brewery, is worth a stop.
