Tropical temperatures prevail in the north of Brazil. And if you want to go exploring in Sao Luis, you should be prepared for warm and humid weather. The city is located on the Ilha de Sao Luis peninsula. This stretch of coast is known for its unusual tidal range of almost seven meters. This has given the region dunes and huge expanses of sand. Sao Luis looks back on a Portuguese, French and Dutch past. Many interesting buildings from the colonial era have been preserved in the old town. Many facades are decorated with Portuguese azulejos tiles. This is probably one of the reasons why UNESCO has included this part of the city on its World Heritage List. The city's harbor is mainly a port of call for fishermen.
