Baffin Bay is a northern marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean between Greenland and Canada. Its deepest point is on Baffin Island at 2,905 meters. Baffin Bay is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by Davis Strait. There is a connection with the Arctic Ocean in the north through Smithsund, and in the west through Lancastersund and Jonessund. On the north side of Baffin Bay is the North Water, which is open year-round and extends up to 80,000 square kilometers. The bay owes its name to the British navigator William Baffin, who passed through it in 1616. It was discovered by his compatriot John Davis in 1585.
