Spain

The Fred Olsen Express shipping company was founded in 1974 by the Olsen family, originally from Norway and resident on the Canary Island of La Gomera since 1904, and initially served only one line between La Gomera and Tenerife. In 1999, the Bencomo Express marked the beginning of the age of fast ferries.

Today, Fred Olsen Express exclusively uses futuristic-looking multihull fast ferries that, at 38 knots (approx. 70 km/h), enable significantly higher speeds and therefore shorter connections than conventional ships. The fleet currently consists of eight ships with capacities ranging from 250 to 1598 passengers, including the Betancuria Express, the largest high-speed ferry in the world.

Fred Olsen Express connects the six largest islands of the Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma and La Gomera). The shortest route is always used, so in many cases Fred Olsen Express does not call at the respective island capital. In addition, there is a line that connects the capital of La Gomera with Valle Gran Rey, which is located on the west side of the island. As the only line, this is not a connection between two islands.

On board all ships there is a cafeteria as well as play facilities for children. Sun decks, however, are not available due to the design of the ships. Passenger cabins are also not available, they are not necessary considering the short sailing times. With the Salón Clase Oro, there is a kind of first-class lounge for the higher fare classes Priority and Oro. These fare classes include some additional privileges such as priority boarding, flexible rebooking or free snacks.

As a supplement to the ferry connections, Fred Olsen Express offers a bus connection to the next largest town on some islands; this is mainly the case where not the capital but a smaller town is called at.
