Aswan
Sights include the Corniche el-Nil promenade with its many beautiful tourist restaurants and various boat trips. The famous Old Cataract Hotel, which was built in 1902 and served as the inspiration for a novel by crime writer Agatha Christie, is located on this promenade. There are also various museums that are well worth a visit, including the Aswan Museum, the Nubian Museum and the open-air museum at the unfinished obelisk. The Archangel Michael Cathedral, the Monastery of St. Simeon and the Mausoleum of the Aga Khan are buildings of particular beauty that no tourist should miss on a trip to the city. The Aswan Dam, which was built in 1960 and supplies the entire region with electricity and protects it from flooding, is world-famous.
