In Stockholm and the region around the Mälaren there are a total of 11 royal castles. Since the constitutional amendment in 1809, which severely curtailed the rights of the king, the castles no longer belong to the royal house but to the Swedish state. However, the king has a right of disposition (kunglig dispositionsrätt) and several castles are occupied by members of the royal family.
