A characteristic feature of the Republic of Austria in Central Europe is its majestic mountain landscape. The Eastern Alps alone cover more than 60 percent of the country's surface. The highest peak is the Grossglockner at 3798 meters. Winter sports therefore play a major role in Austria, although the many lakes such as Wolfgangsee, Mondsee, Millstätter See and Wörthersee are also very popular with vacationers. Vienna, the capital of Austria, is a cultural stronghold with its many baroque and art nouveau buildings and impressive villas from the Wilhelminian period. The most popular destinations also include the Vienna Prater, the traditional Viennese coffee houses and the Hofburg Palace as the former residence of the Habsburgs.
