Trauttmansdorff Castle and its magnificent gardens
In Merano you can find many sights, but Trauttmansdorff Castle and its gardens are already a very special highlight. Originally dating back to the 14th century, the castle has been transformed into a palace through extensive renovations. Trauttmansdorff Castle was also made famous by the visit of Empress Sissi, who chose Merano as a spa town and frequently stayed at Trauttmansdorff Castle during her stays. The castle is surrounded by magnificent botanical gardens, which were opened in 2001. On an area of 12 hectares, various themed worlds and more than 80 garden landscapes from all over the world with countless plant species have been created. There are various experience stations with artists' pavilions, a spectacular viewing platform, the Forbidden Garden and the Botanical Underworld. Visiting the gardens is truly a great experience for the whole family.
South Tyrolean Museum
Today, the castle also houses the Touriseum, the South Tyrolean Regional Museum of Tourism. Here 200 years of tourism history in Tyrol and Merano are conveyed.
Parish Church of St. Nicholas
The parish church of St. Nicholas is the landmark of Merano and is located in the upper old town. The 80 meter high church tower towers far above the other buildings.
The horse racecourse of Merano
One of the largest sights in terms of area is the horse racing arena, which was opened in 1935. Today it is the scene of international steeplechase and flat races.
The Rametz Castle Wine Museum
If you are interested in wine, the wine museum is a good place to visit. Here much is shown about the development of viticulture in the Burggrafenamt. Interesting topics include the cultivation of the vine, pest control, the grape harvest and cellar management. The old tradition of bacon making is also explained in the museum. Of course, a tasting of the wines is offered after the tour.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
