MAMCS

Museum of modern and contemporary art
The Musée d'Art moderne et contemporain de Strasbourg (MAMCS) is a world-renowned museum of modern and contemporary art. Located in a monumental glass building on the banks of the Ill River, it displays paintings, sculptures and decorative art objects from the Impressionist period to the present day.

Famous works by famous artists

The museum's permanent collection ranges from Pablo Picasso to Käthe Kollwitz, from Hans Arp to Wassily Kandinsky and from Max Ernst to Sophie Taeuber-Arp. There is also a focus on recent and new German painting - Markus Lüpertz, Georg Baselitz, Daniel Richter and Jörg Immendorf are just a few of the illustrious names represented here at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Regional artists

But not only internationally known artists find a platform here, the museum is also dedicated to Alsatian artists, who have above all regional value. Among them are representatives of the Young Objectivity, Expressionism or Art Nouveau movements: Martin Hubrecht, René Beeh, Luc Hueber, Camille Claus or Charles Spindler.

Video art and photography

There is also a large collection of photographs in the museum's Photothek, comprising several thousand images. Here you can find works by Robert Mapplethorpe, Jan Saudek, August Sander or Duane Michals - alongside works by regional photographers. In the video art collection, visitors will find works by Nam June Paik, Olaf Breuning or Bill Viola - and many more.

The history of the MAMCS

The Musée d'Art moderne et contemporain was founded in 1973 and received its own building in 1998. In total, it houses over 18,000 objects - paintings, sculptures, graphics, photographs and video art from 1870 to the present day. Changing exhibitions are dedicated to individual artists or a current in art.

The building

The present house of the museum was built from 1995 to 1998. The building, equipped with remarkable glass fronts, was designed by the Parisian architect Adrien Fainsilber. The central lobby, over 100 meters long and 22 meters high, has dimensions that resemble a cathedral. The 5,000 square meters of exhibition space accommodate the works of art. The ground floor houses the Modern Art Tour, the graphic and photographic collection, a large exhibition room, and the bookshop with a museum store and library. The second floor houses the permanent exhibition of modern art and a restaurant. On the roof, visitors will find a nice place to rest in the museum café. The museum is located on the outskirts of the old town and thus easily accessible on foot from the center. However, there is also a dedicated streetcar stop on lines B and C.

A museum with a vision

A four-meter-high horse sculpture by the Italian artist Mimmo Paladino called "Hortus condlusus" stands on the roof of the museum and is considered its landmark and its motto or vision: It should provide insights into European art - and at the same time provide views.
