Nasjonalgalleriet

Nasjonalgalleriet
The National Gallery of Oslo houses the largest collection of Scandinavian, Norwegian and international art in Norway. It includes works from the beginning of the 19th century until today.

The absolute highlight of the collection for many might be the work "The Scream" by Edvard Munch (another version of the painting can also be seen in the Munch Museum ). Currently, the National Gallery is closed and will reopen in the spring of 2021 in the premises of the new National Museum of Oslo. The National Museum on the site of the former Western Railway Station (Vestbanen) will be the largest art museum in Scandinavia. From the roof terrace of the new museum, visitors will have a spectacular view of the City Hall, the Aker Brygge neighborhood, Akershus Fortress and the Oslo Fjord. In the square in front of the main entrance, there will be outdoor seating among trees and rocks. The information center "Mellomstasjonen" will provide information about the plans and the new building of the National Museum.

Mellomstasjonen

Until the National Gallery in the National Museum opens in spring 2021, you can find out everything about the largest art museum in the Nordic countries at the Mellomstasjonen Information Center. Offered is information about the construction project at Vestbanen, guided tours, artist talks with Norwegian artists and breakfast meetings. The Norwegian term "Mellomstasjonen" means "a stop along the way."

New National Museum Oslo

The new National Museum brings together the collections of the National Gallery and the National Museum of the Norwegian capital. Here, important works from antiquity to the present day will be on display under one roof. The collection of old masters and modern art is one of the largest in Scandinavia. A total of 4,500 paintings and 900 sculptures are presented here, as well as around 50,000 drawings and graphics.

Edvard Munch (1863 - 1944) was an important painter and graphic artist of Symbolism. He is considered a pioneer of expressionism in modern painting. Munch lived and worked in France and Germany before returning to his native Norway in 1909.

Norwegian artists

The National Gallery's collection includes significant works by other well-known Norwegian artists, including Thomas Fearnley and JC Dahl. Another highlight is the national romantic masterpiece by Tidemands and Gudes "Bridal Procession on the Hardangerfjord." Harald Sohlberg's "Winter Night in the Mountains," perhaps the most important painting of Norwegian neo-romanticism is another key work. "Albertine e i politilægens venteværelse" by Christian Krohg is also among the must-sees of the collection.

European Art

German artist Lucas Cranach is represented by several paintings in the collection. A self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh and important works by Picasso are also parts of the National Gallery. "The Penitent Mary Magdalene," a highlight from the Baroque period, is among the most important works by Italian artist Artemisia Gentileschi. Also on display are impressive Greco-Roman sculptures.
