Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet

The Natural History Museum in Stockholm
Right next to Stockholm University is the State Natural History Museum (naturhistoriska riksmuseet), the largest museum in Sweden. In addition to various natural history exhibitions, the museum also includes Cosmonova, a planetarium with IMAX cinema.

The largest museum collection in Sweden

The Natural History Museum originated from the zoological collection of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, founded in 1739, which awards the Nobel Prizes in physics, chemistry and economics every year. The collection, which grew larger and larger due to numerous donations, had to move to its own building as early as 1778. The integration of the private zoological collection of Baron Gustaf von Paykull then created the Natural History Museum in 1819.

The largest museum building in Sweden

The neoclassical brick building, reminiscent of a castle, was erected between 1907 and 1918 and designed by the Swedish architect Axel Andersberg. He also designed the Royal Opera House in Stockholm and St. John's Church in Malmö.
