Means of transportation in Amsterdam
Streetcars
The streetcar is one of the most important means of transport in Amsterdam and is ideal for trips within the city center and to the surrounding residential areas. The streetcar network is extensive and well-developed and connects most of the important sights, shopping streets and residential areas. The streetcars generally run punctually and reliably. They also offer a delightful insight into everyday life in the city.
Buses
Buses complement the streetcar network and serve areas that are not directly accessible by streetcar. They are particularly useful for trips to the suburbs or to destinations outside the city center. There are also night buses, which are an alternative to cabs for those returning home late.
Metro (subway)
The metro in Amsterdam is particularly suitable for longer journeys within the city and to some suburbs. The main lines are:
- Line 50 (Ring Line): This line, often referred to as the "Ring", runs in a wide arc around the city center. It connects Gein in the south with Isolatorweg in the west and mainly serves residential areas and the Zuidas business district.
- Line 51 (Amstelveen line): This line runs from Amsterdam Centraal to various destinations in Amstelveen, a suburb south of Amsterdam. It offers a direct connection to important locations such as the Zuidas business district and the VU university complex.
- Line 52 (Noord/Zuidlijn): This relatively new line, also known as the North/South line, is particularly significant as it connects Amsterdam Noord with the city center and the south of the city. It starts in Noord and ends in Zuid, serving important stations such as Amsterdam Centraal and Zuid station. This line has significantly improved Amsterdam's public transportation system.
- Line 53 (Oostlijn): This line connects Centraal Station with the eastern part of Amsterdam, terminating at Gaasperplas. It serves important points such as Amstel Station and the Amsterdam-Oost residential area.
- Line 54 (Oostlijn): Similar to line 53, line 54 also runs east from Centraal Station, but terminates in Gein. It also serves Amstel Station and other important stations in eastern Amsterdam.
Ferries
The ferries on the river IJ are a unique element of the public transport system in Amsterdam. They connect the city center with the up-and-coming district of Amsterdam-Noord. The ferry services are short, regular and free, making them an attractive option for pedestrians and cyclists.
Trains
Although trains are mainly used for inter-city travel, they also play an important role in Amsterdam's public transportation system. From Amsterdam Centraal station, travelers can reach other Dutch cities as well as some important suburbs and areas around Amsterdam. Trains are also ideal for reaching Schiphol Airport or other major cities such as Rotterdam, The Hague or Utrecht.
