Schönbrunn Zoo

The oldest zoo in the world

Schönbrunn Zoo is the oldest zoo in the world. It was founded in 1752 by the Habsburg imperial dynasty and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site at Schönbrunn.

Best Zoo in Europe

In the last 20 years, the zoo has been named best zoo in Europe a total of five times. This is one of the reasons why over two million people from all over the world visit the zoo every year. You can explore a total of 17 hectares of zoo grounds and admire over 700 animal species with a total of more than 8,000 animals.

Watch the animals during their feedings

The animal feedings are especially recommended. These take place daily at set times. If you want to get detailed information from the animal keepers and also don't want to miss the increased activity in the enclosures at feeding time, you can very well arrange your visit to the zoo according to these times.

The herd of African elephants is well worth seeing. The successful breeding of these largest mammals on earth has made Schönbrunn Zoo famous far beyond Austria's borders. Every day you can watch the elephants training with their keepers. Next to the elephants, the polar bears are among the zoo visitors' favourite animals. They can also be observed underwater through a large viewing window in the modern Polar Bear World, which opened in 2014.

Focus on species conservation and nature projects

Special guided tours are available for school classes. Teacher seminars and conservation workshops are also held regularly, as Schönbrunn Zoo has made it its business to be a strong partner for species conservation and nature projects as an educational centre and focus for research and teaching.

When it comes to species conservation, the zoo is not only dedicated to the preservation of exotic wild animals, but also to the protection of native wildlife. If you plan to visit Schönbrunn Zoo regularly, we recommend that you take out a free ZOOcard. It grants several discounts and regularly provides you with the latest information.
