Meißen
Travel Guide & Travel Information
Meissen is a town rich in history, not far from Dresden. Meissen is considered the "cradle of Saxony". The German emperors once founded the first settlement on Slavic territory. The "Blue Swords", signs of the first porcelain manufactory in Europe, gained world fame. Even today, these fragile works of art are produced in Meissen and can be viewed in the exhibition hall of the State Porcelain Manufactory.
Meissen's landmark is Albrechtsburg Castle, which rises on the castle hill. In Meissen Cathedral, the 13th-century statues of the founders can be viewed. The cathedral square is lined with other impressive buildings. Upstream from the Elbe, you will encounter idyllic vineyards and can taste the fine wines in the cozy wine taverns.
