Amsterdam Maritime Museum

Het Scheepvaartmuseum
The history of the Netherlands is closely linked to trade and seafaring. Het Scheepvaartmuseum, only twenty minutes from the central station, documents the history of Amsterdam's seafaring in a vividly impressive way.

The massive building dates back to the 17th century and was once a warehouse. Liesbeth van der Pohl has succeeded in creating an impressive synthesis of modern architecture and traditional building. The Open Pleyn, the museum's covered courtyard, is considered an architectural masterpiece.

The founding of the museum itself, like so much in Amsterdam, sprang from a private initiative of seafarers and merchants who came together around 1900 to document the history of Dutch seafaring. Atlases, ship models, port displays provide an overview of the development of shipbuilding, the expansion of sea routes and the diverse trade relations.
